We will be setting up a meeting in the near future where we hope to get Mayor McCarthy and possibly representatives from the police department to discuss their plans for the downtown and for enhancing security in the Watsessing Heights area.

In addition, a new Facebook Group has been created, called "Watsessing Heights Neighbors," where we are also sharing information among any neighbors who are on Facebook. Just search on that term and you will find our Group.

From the recent message to the neighborhood:

"As many of you who have been involved in the past have probably noticed, the WHNA has not been very active recently. Many of the original members have left the neighborhood or have become too busy (or tired!) to be as active.

However, we are aware there are many new people in the neighborhood who may be interested in getting involved, and perhaps there are others who now have the time to become more active in the association than in the past.

Now seems like a good time to revitalize the WHNA, as there has been a recent break-in our neighborhood. It happened during the day when no one was home. In addition, there have been reports of suspicious vehicles driving up and down our streets in the middle of the night, shining flashlights at houses and talking on walkie-talkies. Please keep your doors and windows locked when you aren't home, and keep an eye out for suspicious activity. If you notice anything unusual happening, please let the police know.

We hope by revitalizing the WHNA we will increase the number of "eyes on the street" and also get more attention paid to our neighborhood by the police. In addition, with the downtown redevelopment finally starting (we hope!), now is the time to get together and make sure that whatever is done suits our needs and desires, since the downtown abuts the Watsessing Heights neighborhood. The redevelopment is key to enhancing our property values and making Bloomfield a better place to live.

As many of you may recall, in the past the WHNA has done the following:

- Held monthly - then quarterly - meetings. These meetings had speakers ranging from representatives from the police and fire departments; the mayor and council representatives; real estate agents discussing the real estate market; zoning board chairman explaining the zoning board process; school officials discussing school-related issues, and more.

- Created and distributed a newsletter to the entire neighborhood plus local officials.

- Held biannual park cleanups (with sister organization, the Watsessing Park Conservancy)

- Sponsored wine tastings, evenings at the theater, and other social events.

- Held annual Holiday Parties and Summer Socials.

- Put up holiday decorations around the fencing of Watsessing Park.

- Submitted detailed suggestions to the Planning Board for the downtown redevelopment following input from professional planners.

We would love to which of the above activities you feel are the most important things to revive. In addition, if you have other suggestions for projects and issues for the WHNA to address, please let us know. And naturally, if you are interested in becoming directly involved with any of these projects, we want to hear from you!"

Please comment here or send an e-mail to whna@yahoo.com with any suggestions.Watsessing Heights Neighborhood Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02064388873557730118noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3194831671147533254.post-28145821149651512642009-07-16T14:47:00.001-07:002009-07-16T14:50:57.123-07:00Public Meeting on Watsessing Park 7/27Your input is needed at a public meeting hosted by Essex County on Monday, July 27, 2009, at the Senior Center building in the park at Conger Street at 7 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting is to present the County's plans for constructing a combination soccer/la crosse field with artificial turf, lighting, seating, and partial fencing, in the section of Watsessing Park bordering Bloomfield Avenue between the Parkway and the area around the bandstand.

A second artificial turf field would be constructed in the central area within the boundaries of the running track in the section of the park between Glenwood Avenue and Cleveland Terrace.

Please come to the meeting and express your opinion about these plans. Although much has been accomplished, there is always more to do.

You can download and print a membership form from our website, at this address: http://www.whna.org/join.html. To join, please fill it out and return the form, with your dues, to WHNA, Inc., P.O. Box 1783, Bloomfield, NJ 07003. (Suggested dues are $25 per household but any amount will make you a member.)

Why join?

We need volunteers and members to keep making a difference in the neighborhood for you.

By joining our organization, you give us the "strength of numbers" to be able to influence decisions being made by the Township.

In addition, although the WHNA is a non-profit organization, money from your dues is needed to carry out projects such as new plantings on the "island" between Glenwood Avenue and Prospect Street, printing of brochures promoting the neighborhood, and supplies for social events and meetings.

Below are some of the most important accomplishments of the WHNA over the past decade:

In partnership with the Township of Bloomfield, the WHNA received two Community Development Block Grants, which were used to revitalize the storefronts and streetscape on the corner of Carteret Street and Morse Avenue, and to upgrade the Glenwood Avenue corridor with new Belgian block curbs, sidewalks, trees and street repaving. A third CDBG grant has been received for upgrading Carteret Street where it extends from Glenwood Avenue to Prospect Street facing Watsessing School. We expect this work to take place in 2008.

The WHNA worked with Essex County to upgrade the playgrounds in Watsessing Park at Conger Street and the East Orange section of the park at Cleveland Terrace, as well as designing and adding an additional playground near the entrance to the park on Glenwood Avenue.

We created a tax-exempt sister organization, the Watsessing Park Conservancy, which was has received several Green Acres Grants in partnership with Essex County, which are being used to implement a myriad of improvements in Watsessing Park.

The WHNA and WPC were the driving force behind the creation of the Dog Park in Watsessing Park and worked with the County and NJDEP to design the facility, the first of its kind in Essex County. One of our members has also created a “Watsessing Dog Park” Forum (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/watsessingdogpark/) to enable dog owners to chat about the dog park.

The WHNA and WPC have jointly hosted park cleanups each year since 1998 in partnership with the County and the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission.

The WHNA has promoted our neighborhood through publishing our own Watsessing Heights Newsletter (distributed to 1100 households in the neighborhood and mailed to over 200 officials, realtors and local businesses), as well as through publicity in local newspapers and other media outlets.

The WHNA has also publicized our neighborhood through our website at http://www.whna.org/ and the WHNA and WPC blogs, which were created in 2007 to encourage an interactive conversation among neighbors and expand our ability to keep the neighborhood informed of activities. (The WPC blog is linked at the sidebar).

The WHNA has held numerous social events during the past 10 years, including Evenings at the Theatre, Summer Socials in the park, the Holiday Socials at Felicity Tower, and annual “Trash to Cash” neighborhood garage sales.

Please join the WHNA for the year 2008. Let's continue to "make a difference" in our neighborhood!
Watsessing Heights Neighborhood Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02064388873557730118noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3194831671147533254.post-84160767051280459312007-11-30T17:44:00.000-08:002007-11-30T18:11:15.137-08:00Time to Put Up The Park Decorations!Every year the Watsessing Heights Neighborhood Association and the Watsessing Park Conservancy join forces with the County to put up holiday decorations all around the fences of Watsessing Park.

This year's event will be held on Saturday, December 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Coffee and donuts/bagels will be provided for those who come early. She had battled multiple sclerosis for many years.

Jane was passionately dedicated to Watsessing Park and was a driving force in the creation of the Watsessing Park Conservancy. She served as its first president before she had to step down due to health issues. She also worked hand in hand with the county in getting the Watsessing Dog Park built as well as having the historic band stand restored in the park.

Jane was a supporting member of the Watsessing Heights Neighborhood Association from its early inception and made many valuable contributions to our neighborhood and the Township of Bloomfield. She will be sorely missed.

There will be a memorial service for her this Friday, October 19th at O’Boyle’s Funeral Home which is located at 309 Broad Street in Bloomfield, NJ.

You are invited to pay your respects from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. Yes, the WHNA is marking its 10th anniversary as an organization! It’s hard to believe that 10 years have passed. We have accomplished so much, and there is so much left to do.

One of our more exciting accomplishments was the creation of the Watsessing Park Conservancy, a full 501(c)(3) (charitable) organization dedicated to the preservation and upkeep of Watsessing Park. Partnering with Essex County, the WPC has received Green Acres funds over the past several years that have been used to refurbish the historic bandstand and the field houses, replace the running track with state-of-the art material, upgrade the playgrounds, and more.

To help celebrate our anniversary, we are working with the WPC to hold a gala fundraiser at 12 Miles West to continue to raise needed funds for the park. Green Acres grants are becoming scarce and the WPC needs funding to continue its mission. Funds are needed to plant new trees and repair the bridges in the park, among other projects.

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, May 19th as WHNA/WPC and 12 Miles West present “Tales of an Urban Burb.” This world premiere play by Rose Caruso is also part of the New Jersey Playwrights Festival of New Plays. Come and see how the urbane and “sub” urbane clash in this rollicking comedic look at life in and out of the city. This promises to be an evening filled with laughter!

Tickets will be $30 each and are partially tax deductible. We will also have a pre-theater wine and cheese gathering as well as a post-theater “Meet the Artists” reception, which are included in the price of your ticket. The pre-theater event starts at 6:30 and the play starts at 8 p.m.

If you are interested in attending, please e-mail the WHNA at WHNA@yahoo.com, with your name and number of tickets needed. Or you can call 973-680-WHNA and leave the information there. Payment can be made the night of the show; we will accept cash or checks payable to “WPC.”

Seats are limited and you must reserve your tickets by e-mail or phone, so don’t delay – contact us today! We look forward to sharing this evening with you.

Also, Mark Your Calendars!

Once again, WHNA is proud to sponsor a little league team through BALL (Bloomfield American Little League), formerly known as Bloomfield Southern Little League.

Opening day is this Saturday, April 14th at 11:00am at Wrights Field. Team WHNA (coached by WHNA member Steve Rosenberger) will be playing their first game at the field at 12 noon against Armanti. Our current website, http://www.whna.org, is still available and we will continue to offer downloads of our newsletter, our upcoming scheduled events, our membership application, and other important information on that site.

However, the format of the site is not flexible enough to easily allow for interactive communication among the neighbors. We often e-mail the group mailing list with upcoming events; however, this blog will be available anytime you are interested in seeing if there is any new news about the neighborhood or the town that may be of interest. The newsletter only comes out every quarter. This blog will give us the opportunity to update you more frequently about events in the neighborhood.

In addition, you will be able to comment on posts and make suggestions to us for issues you may want the WHNA to pursue, comments on the newsletter or requests for specific subjects or speakers for upcoming meetings.

Longer term, we will be accepting ads for items you'd like to sell or your local business. More to come on that!

In the meantime, here is an open thread for you to let us know what you think we should cover in the blog and make any suggestions you may have.Watsessing Heights Neighborhood Associationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02064388873557730118noreply@blogger.com8
